October 22, 2013 – Charles R. Hulten, Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland, has joined the Technology Policy Institute as an Adjunct Senior Fellow.

Professor Hulten has done seminal research on the measurement of intangible or knowledge-based capital. His work shows that investment in intangible capital in the United States has for some time exceeded investment in tangible capital. “Chuck’s work is fundamental for any informed discussion about innovation and innovation policy, both in the U.S. and globally,” stated TPI president Tom Lenard. “I am extremely pleased he will be joining us and contributing to our work in this area.”

Charles Hulten has taught at the University of Maryland since 1985. He has published widely on the measurement of capital, productivity and economic growth. Hulten is also a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and Chairman of the Conference on Research in Income and Wealth, and Senior Fellow at The Conference Board. In addition, he is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Before joining the University of Maryland, Hulten was a Senior Research Associate at the Urban Institute and Assistant Professor of Economics at Johns Hopkins University. Hulten’s undergraduate and Ph.D. degrees are from the University of California, Berkeley.
