The Facebook-Cambridge Analytica incident has focused attention on user data and privacy. Legislative and policy responses cite the European Union’s new data standards as a possible direction for the US. Social media companies are rolling out new privacy policies.
That may be well and good, writes TPI’s President and Senior Fellow Scott Wallsten in a new article in RealClearPolitics, but “would have done little, if anything, to prevent the damage the Cambridge Analytica incident helped foster.”
What is the real issue, then? According to the article, it was “the ability of bad actors — the Russian government in particular — to use social media to promote misinformation in an effort to suppress voter turnout and change votes.”
