The Mueller report on the investigation into Russia’s attempted hacking of the 2016 U.S. midterm elections was released today in redacted form by the U.S. Department of Justice. Among the report’s contents and related news coverage are details of Internet troll activity by the Internet Research Agency (IRA), an organization with close ties to the Russian government.
The Technology Policy Institute provided a detailed look into the IRA election year hacking on October 29, 2018, in one of its Two Think Minimum podcasts, “How Russian Twitter Trolls Influence Society and Elections.”
The guest that day was Patrick Warren, an MIT PhD and assistant professor of Economics at Clemson University. Warren is a leading authority on the impact of Internet trolls on elections. His work is based on a data set of about 3 million troll tweets that he and his coauthor Darren Linvill downloaded and made available on the FiveThirtyEight website.
