August 21, 2016 – Scott Wallsten, current Vice President for Research and Senior Fellow, has been named the new President of the Technology Policy Institute. TPI’s current President, Thomas Lenard, will remain with TPI as a Senior Fellow and President Emeritus. The announcement was made tonight at the opening of TPI’s annual Aspen Forum and Wallsten will assume his role September 1st.

“I am honored to be taking the reins of TPI,” stated incoming President Wallsten. “I plan to build on the great work Tom has done in creating TPI and positioning the organization as the premier think tank studying the economics of science and technology policy.”

“Leading TPI for the past nine years has the most enjoyable and rewarding experience of my professional life and I’m proud of the reputation for independent, rigorous work that we have achieved.  The need for solid economic analysis of public policies is if anything more important than ever.  Scott is responsible for much of TPI’s best work and he clearly is the right person to lead TPI to the next level,” said Lenard.  “I look forward to helping him do that in the coming years.”

Raymond Gifford stated, “Handing the baton from Tom to Scott was as easy and seamless a leadership transition you can imagine.  They’ve worked side-by-side at TPI for 9 years, and they will continue to do so.  It’s just that Scott now gets a bigger office than Tom.”

Wallsten has been with TPI since its inception. Previously, he was the Economics Director for the FCC’s National Broadband Plan and has been a lecturer in Stanford University’s public policy program, Director of Communications Policy Studies and Senior Fellow at The Progress & Freedom Foundation, a Senior Fellow at the AEI – Brookings Joint Center for Regulatory Studies and a Resident Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, an economist at The World Bank, a Scholar at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, and a Staff Economist at the U.S. President’s Council of Economic Advisers. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Georgetown Center for Business and Public Policy.  Wallsten holds a PhD in economics from Stanford University.
