Reduced Registration Offered Through July 1st
A working agenda is posted on the Technology Policy Institute’s 2016 Aspen Forum, scheduled for August 21 – 23. Registration for TPI’s signature event is available on the TPI website, with reduced fees through July 1. Discussions at the Aspen Forum will look ahead to challenges in technology policy in 2016 and beyond, including the future of connectivity, privacy, antitrust and digital policy in the global economy.
This year’s Forum will feature three keynote speakers from the entertainment industry, the Chairwoman of the Federal Trade Commission, and the author of a new book on a future run by smart robots.
Evan Shapiro, Executive Vice President, Digital Enterprises at NBCUniversal, will give the dinner keynote on August 22. Shapiro spearheaded the launch of Seeso and works on the company-wide strategic development of digital opportunities. Before joining NBCUniversal, Shapiro was President of Participant Media’s Pivot, President of IFC TV and Sundance Channel, and executive producer numerous acclaimed original documentaries and series, including This Film Is Not Yet Rated and Portlandia.
Dennis Kooker, President, Global Digital Business and U.S. Sales at Sony Music Entertainment, will discuss music’s digital transformation: restoring the relationship between demand and revenues. Kooker leads Sony Music Entertainment’s digital business strategy and activities worldwide, as well as its U.S. sales and distribution division. He is responsible for working closely with the company’s key business partners as well as internal labels and divisions to develop new revenue streams and grow Sony Music’s revenues across all digital and physical platforms.
Laura Martin, Senior Analyst for Entertainment, Cable and Media at Needham & Company LLC, will present her analysis of the future of the media market. Prior to joining Needham, she founded Media Metrics, LLC, was a media analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston and Capital Research and Management. Martin also served as Executive Vice President of Financial Strategy and Investor Relations for Vivendi Universal in Paris.
The Honorable Edith Ramirez, Chairwoman of the Federal Trade Commission, will give the Tuesday morning keynote address. Under Chairwoman Ramirez, the FTC has been at the center of consumer protection and competition policy involving tech and ecommerce. Recent actions range from the Commission’s examination of big data, to protection of the privacy and security of consumer information, to halting a deceptive crowdfunding campaign.
Robin Hanson, Associate Professor of Economics at George Mason University and Research Associate at the Future of Humanity Institute of Oxford University, will discuss his new book, The Age of Em: Work, Love and Life When Robots Rule the Earth. In The Age of Em, Hanson, drawing on his years of experience in artificial intelligence research at Lockheed and NASA, predicts what a future world dominated by “brain emulations” or smart robots would look like.
