Board unanimously votes for Mr. Wijewardena to join citing his vast policy, grassroots and research expertise
May 10, 2018 – The Technology Policy Institute (TPI), a 501(c)(3) educational and research organization focused on studying the economics of innovation, technological change, and related regulation, announces that Madura Wijewardena has joined its Board of Directors. Mr.Wijewardena currently serves as the Vice President of Public Policy for Comcast. Previously he served as Director of Research for the National Urban League. Before that, Mr. Wijewardena was a community organizer in Chicago.
“We are delighted to welcome Madura onto our Board,” said Dr. Scott Wallsten, TPI’s President and Senior Fellow. “He will provide guidance and a unique perspective into the work and research we are doing. His mix of experience working within communities and driving public policy means that he can help connect the complex policy dots in a way that few can.”
Throughout his career, Mr. Wijewardena has studied broadband internet market structures and access, focusing especially on underserved populations. During his time as Director of Research at the National Urban League, Mr. Wijewardena was responsible for macroeconomic research and online community building campaigns – particularly focusing on low income communities. Prior to the Urban League, Mr. Wijewardena was a community organizer for Barack Obama’s first campaign within several Chicago precincts.
“I am honored to be joining TPI’s Board of Directors,” said Mr. Wijewardena. “There is no other think tank anywhere that so rigorously studies the issues that matter to me both personally and professionally. I look forward to contributing however I can to advance TPI’s mission – especially as it pertains to research into how technology markets and business models are rapidly evolving and innovative research on closing the digital divide in low income communities.”
TPI’s Board voted to approve Mr. Wijewardena unanimously during their May meeting. His appointment is effective immediately. Mr. Wijewardena holds a master’s degree from the University of Chicago focusing on quantitative analysis, and a law degree and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Sydney, Australia.
