The Real Benefits of Gigabit Networks Have Nothing to do with Speed

Our Internet speed fetish comes with costs and benefits. The costs are that we have collectively decided without evidence that speed matters more than any other quality attribute and that it is worth investing resources to reach certain arbitrary speed goals. It has distracted us from the much harder, but arguably more important, question of which Internet quality attributes actually matter more and how our networks perform along those lines.
